How should this medicine be used?
Furazolidone comes as a tablet and a liquid to take by mouth. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take furazolidone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Other uses for this medicine
Furazolidone also is used in combination with fluids for treatment of acute infantile diarrhea. Furazolidone also is used to treat traveler's diarrhea, cholera, and bacteremic salmonellosis. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medicine for your condition.
What special precautions should I follow?

Before taking furazolidone
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to furazolidone or any other drugs.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, including amphetamines and other drugs for diet control; any eyedrops; levodopa (Larodopa, Sinemet); meperidine (Demerol); methylphenidate (Ritalin); tricyclic antidepressant agents such as amitriptyline (Elavil), amoxapine (Asendin), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), doxepin (Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), trimipramine (Surmontil); medications for asthma, cough, and colds; and vitamins.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glucose-6-phosphatase deficiency or diabetes.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking furazolidone, call your doctor.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking furazolidone.
tell your doctor about your use of alcohol. This medication may cause severe nausea and vomiting if alcohol is consumed during therapy and for the 4 days following the completion of therapy.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid foods and beverages containing tyramine or tryptophan while taking furazolidone. These foods and beverages include alcoholic beverages, especially beer, Chianti, and other red wines; alcohol-free beer; cheeses (especially strong, aged, or processed varieties); sauerkraut; yogurt; raisins; bananas; sour cream; pickled herring; liver (especially chicken liver); dry sausage (including hard salami and pepperoni); canned figs; avocados; soy sauce; yeast extracts; papaya products (including certain meat tenderizers); fava beans; and broad bean pods. Excessive amounts of caffeine and chocolate also should be avoided.
These dietary restrictions should be followed during the course of therapy and should be continued for 4 days after therapy has been discontinued.
